In the last game before the National Titles, the Magpies were strengthened by having almost a full strength squad to pick from. The coaching staff laid out the challenge to play 4 strong quarters of football and not drop off.
Mantzaris started in the ruck and consistently gave first use of the ball to the engine room consisting of Smith, Taylor, Murphy and McCormick. They got plenty of touches early and helped by the pressure of Kyle, Lehane, Squires and Walsh across half back the Magpies dominated the play in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Stone started to assert himself across half forward and with Bowen and Spielman forming a two prong attack out of the goal square, the Magpies were able to kick away to a comfortable break. Davis and Blandford also got plenty of the ball up forward and after Davis kicked his first just before the major change the Magpies had kicked away to a 5 goal lead at the major change.
The third quarter saw much of the same and with New York using their rotations to continue the pressure, Spiteri, McMahon, Walkington and Desai all came into their own, gathering plenty of touches. Nick Walker continued to be a presence in the backline, pulling down plenty of marks and using the run of McMaster and Thompson to consistently propel the ball forward.
In the last quarter the Magpies ran all over BWE with Buckingham moving into the ruck and Donner and Caine up forward. Simson, Caldwell and Rush controlled the half back which kept BWE to 6 goals for the game, allowing NY to win run out 10 goal winners.
After the game Adam Mantzaris said the “it was great to get a good hit out before Nationals and a bit of run into the legs. BWE put up a good effort but we managed to over run them in the end”.

The club would like to congratulate one of our alumi, Christopher Heffernan, 170 game AFL veteran and AFL Premiership player, for his appointment in October to the Essendon Football Club Board. He is a champion player, an amazing clubman, and dedicated individual. We wish him all the best!

During the week, NY Magpies Marketing Director Brett Smiley had the pleasure to catch up with Heff and asked him about his latest appointment. A modest Heffernan explained “they wanted to inject some younger and more recent player perspectives into the Board, and I am one of the few recent premiership players without an existing football conflict.”

Boston came out firing to honor the passing of one of their clubmen and got the jump on the Magpies who looked sluggish in their first game after the mid season break. The Magpies back six of Kyle, Caine, McMaster, Davis, Caldwell and Smith held firm under immense pressure and managed to repel most of Boston’s attacks.

In the second quarter the forwards started to find the ball with Bowen, Collins and Guarino all getting their hands on the Ball. Mitchell and Blandford also lifted providing plenty of crumbing power. The Magpies went into the half time break trailing by 3 goals.

The Magpies came out of the half time break trying to get back into the game but Boston had their tails up and continued to pressure the Magpies into mistakes. As a result the Magpies couldn’t get their running game going and the game continued to be played on Boston’s terms. McIntyre and Lin went down with shoulder injuries leaving the Magpies midfield depleted. Spiteri and Buxton moved into the middle and provided some run however the Magpies were still second to the ball and couldn’t close the gap on the scoreboard.

After a ferocious spray from the coaching staff at 3 quarter time the Magpies had 20 minutes to make amends for their first 3 quarters. Taylor, Murphy, Dixon and Smiley all responded by lifting their work rate and getting first hands on the ball. The move of McMaster to CHF resulted in him kicking what would have to be close to goal of the year. Lyndon and Thompson also continued to get their good run from defense and the Magpies booted 4 goals in an impressive quarter of hard running football to run out winners.

In the second game of the day the Magpies reserves team continued the theme, running over the top of the Boston reserves team. Flavel dominated in the ruck all game and Ormsby, Simson and Lyndon got plenty of the ball across the middle.

Walsh, Pezanko and Melo worked hard in defense and in the second half the forward line led by McMahon, Keeffe, Collins and Donner all got on top allowing NY to kick away to a solid win.

After the game acting captain Conor Walsh said “It was a great win by the boys today, Boston were on top early and I didn’t know if we could respond but the whole team lifted in the second half and it shows the great depth of the club.”
