New York prove too classy for BWE
In the last game before the National Titles, the Magpies were strengthened by having almost a full strength squad to pick from. The coaching staff laid out the challenge to play 4 strong quarters of football and not drop off.
Mantzaris started in the ruck and consistently gave first use of the ball to the engine room consisting of Smith, Taylor, Murphy and McCormick. They got plenty of touches early and helped by the pressure of Kyle, Lehane, Squires and Walsh across half back the Magpies dominated the play in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Stone started to assert himself across half forward and with Bowen and Spielman forming a two prong attack out of the goal square, the Magpies were able to kick away to a comfortable break. Davis and Blandford also got plenty of the ball up forward and after Davis kicked his first just before the major change the Magpies had kicked away to a 5 goal lead at the major change.
The third quarter saw much of the same and with New York using their rotations to continue the pressure, Spiteri, McMahon, Walkington and Desai all came into their own, gathering plenty of touches. Nick Walker continued to be a presence in the backline, pulling down plenty of marks and using the run of McMaster and Thompson to consistently propel the ball forward.
In the last quarter the Magpies ran all over BWE with Buckingham moving into the ruck and Donner and Caine up forward. Simson, Caldwell and Rush controlled the half back which kept BWE to 6 goals for the game, allowing NY to win run out 10 goal winners.
After the game Adam Mantzaris said the “it was great to get a good hit out before Nationals and a bit of run into the legs. BWE put up a good effort but we managed to over run them in the end”.
