In the one women’s match of the day, the Baltimore Washington Lady Eagles led the New York Lady Magpies at the end of the first half, but the Lady Pies took control in the second term to win the game.

Unable to overcome the BW Eagles on the field, the Magpies stepped it up in the bar, dominating representatives from the Eagles and the Philly Hawks in a post-tourney Boat Race at Mothers in Federal Hill.

Big thanks to Magpies Jimmy Polulach and Arne Pulle, who leant a hand with umpiring duties on the day.

2009 EAFL Champs

The Magpies sewed up the 2009 EAFL Premiership this Saturday by taking down Boston at home at Tibbetts Brook Park.  In extremely muddy conditions reminiscent of June’s slosh-fest against Baltimore-Washington, the home team kept the visitors goalless, taking control of the game in the second half after a rousing speech from coach Rob Oliver.  This is the Pies’ first top-of-the-ladder finish in the EAFL since 2005, ousting reigning champions for the past 2 years, the Baltimore-Washington Eagles.

The Pies dedicated the victory to club stalwart and former president Doug Lewis, who celebrated his 100th game on Saturday - no small achievement in a league that plays only about 10 games a year!  Congratulations to Dougie, a true Magpie Legend, on his fantastic achievement.

Lady Pies Down Under!

After months of preparation, America’s favorite team of badass shazzas is finally infiltrating Australia. The US Freedom squad’s first Australian tournament began last week, starting a grand footy tour across Oz. Two years in the making, the ladies, including several Lady Magpie favorites, will face women’s clubs in various cities, finding time to sightsee and enjoy some infamous Aussie hospitality between bruises.

Though no victories so far for the Freedom Squad, the games have been competitive. The Magpies’ own Siobhan McHale scored the first goal of the tour, against the Sydney Women’s League, though the team fell (4.9.33 to 2.6.18). Lady Pie Monica Robbins snagged a Best on Ground.  The ladies were treated to a private tour of the Sydney Swans facility, and some time with the muscly men.  Then off to Cairns, where scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef may have eased the loss to the Cairns Women’s League (3.11.29 to 1.8.14) at Cazaly Stadium.

Freedom will face Dev Squad in Bendigo August 13, followed by Latrobe Uni on August 15.

And the reaction from Australians? The headline in the Sun Herald summed it up, “You must be Yankin our chain,” though appreciation of the team’s hard-hitting skills follows the initial disbelief.

The article relies heavily on quotations from Pie Christina Licata. Though sidelined with a torn ACL, the petite Pie, known for her disproportionate lung power on the field, has apparently settled for making herself heard in the national media.  Her fellow Lady Pies remain unsurprised.

Check out Christina’s blog of the tour on the USfooty website.

The New York Magpies won a nail-biter against the Baltimore Washington Eagles at home on June 27, holding off the late charging visitors to win by 2 points.  A game day downpour at Tibbets Park made for some challenging conditions, but both teams gave it their all.

New York 6.10 (46)

Balt/Wash 6.8 (44)

The Lady Pies travelled to Milwaukee for the Dairyland Duel on June 27.  In what was a gruelling day of footy, the Pies pulled off their first ever victory, beating Denver 10.4.64 to 2.4.16.  New York was unable to overcome Milwaukee or Atlanta, but are looking forward to taking on these teams again in October.  Congratulations to Drea Casillas, named ”Dairyland Princess” i.e. Best on Ground for the tournament.  Photos from the day here.

Ex-Magpies help Hong Kong Dragons take home Manila Cup

Former New Yorkers but Magpies for life Dylan Bryant and Jarrad Crighton helped the Hong Kong Dragons take home the Manila Cup for the 2nd year running last weekend.  The HK Dragons took down China, Philippines and Malaysia on their way to the title, beating Malaysia 9-11-65 to 1-2-8 in the final in very wet conditions. This gruelling comp saw each 12-man team play 4 games last Saturday, followed by the grand final at the end of the same day.

Great job, Dyl and Crights (pictured here enjoying an apres-match beverage).

The Magpies made New York history earlier this month at our annual State of Origin match – Manhattan’s first ever AFL game under lights!  Congratulations to the Vics – featuring special guests AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson and the League’s lawyer Andrew Dillon – on a great victory in the men’s game.  The Allies took the honours in the women’s match.

Special thanks to Matt Astill at the Australian for his efforts and support in arranging the venue.

Twice Bitten – Oct 11 2004

The New York Magpies fell victim once again to the Denver Bulldogs in 2004, falling just short in the Division One Grand Final. It was the second time the Pies lost to Denver this season and the second year in a row New York lost to Denver at Nationals.

The Pies took a lead into halftime, but Denver”s relentless second half attack wore down New York in the final 10 minutes to take the victory, winning their third successive title.
