Metro League Round Three – May 8, 2004
Metro League Home, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Finals Next week’s Outback Steakhouse Metroleague Championships Game is looking to be a sellout with the men from the downtown, the Village Bohemians, taking on 2003 expansion franchise, the Suburban Tollmen. In the game to decide who will take home the wooden spoon, the reigning champion Hudson River Rats will try to change their losing fortunes against the camera bearing combination of the Times Square Tourists. Games will begin at 2pm at Van Cortlandt Park, with the Championship Presentation to be held at the Outback Steakhouse later that evening. Game 1- Suburban Tollmen vs Times Square Tourists Tollmen 15-1-91 defeated the Tourists 9-0-54 The Tourists still looked hungover from their win over the River Rats in Round 2 of Metroleague and had no answer to the early onslaught of goals from the men from the East of the river. The Camera Bearing players saw themselves down seven goals at the main break. Team Ezpass was very confident in their half-time huddle, with veteran forward Bruce Cameron quoted as saying, “As individuals we are a bunch of trash, but together we are a pretty good group of sh*t.” During the second quarter, boundary umpire Jarrod Creighton found himself on the ground, literally, after trying to perfect a throw-in replicating that of hall-of-fame boundary rider I.M. Amoron. Juice, back from time at the Floral Park Nursing Home as part of the Tollmen’s community outreach program, provided two goals through the midfield. In addition, the elder statesman Bruce Cameron broke a New York Metroleague record, bagging seven through the middle for the Bridge and Tunnel outfit. However, the Tollmen relaxed during the final break allowing six fourth quarter goals including three each to lanky John Woodbridge and muscleman Brett Prieur. Game 2- Village Bohemians vs Hudson River Rats Bohemians 9-0-54 defeated Rats 8-1-49 For the second straight week the River Rats showed up with a depleted team with only five players, including three in for their first year as a double ‘R’. Rats legend Guy Luminato (so far under the thumb that he may need a prescription of Lamisil), Rats CEO Sam Reid and international traveler Tom Hayes all out for the game. The Bohemians began the game in fine form and found themselves up by three majors at the main break thanks to some great goals from skipper Doug Lewis, perennial latecomer Sean ‘Beaks’ Keenan and versatile Keith Davies. Pies AC Jarrod Creighton was found loose throughout the game until the Jersey scouts high in the grandstands deployed a tagger to contain him. During the third quarter the Rats were able to turn things around with former Lehigh Valley star Scott Long kicking his first two career goals and the original Jersey boy Tom Thompson providing great support up the middle. Baby Rats Mike DeBeasi and Adam Ribaudo also provided great support throughout the day. A sensational coaching move by ‘Puppet’ Lewis moving himself to full-back put a quick stop to the River Rats run. With scores all locked up at three-quarter time, the one remaining birth in the Outback Steakhouse Metroleague Championship Game was the only unanswered question of the day. With two early goals to the Village people, the Rats could not answer and found themselves down five points at the final siren. |
