2006 State of Origin Match – September 23, 2006
Allies vs Victoria This years State of Origin clash was a game to forgot for the Vics. The game was reduced to a metro league style with 11 players each and no bench. The Vics kicked the first goal and the teams traded scores for the first 5 minutes before the Allies broke it open to lead by 2 goals at the first break then 5 goals at the half. Before half time the writing was on the wall with infighting and a lack of discipline showing for the Vics. It was a massacre in the 2nd half as the Allies did as they pleased piling on the goals. They had multiple goal scorers led by Matt Smith with 6 in an unfamiliar full forward role and James Polulach with 4. Tim Buxton was instrumental in the middle and the Unicycle toiled hard in the ruck all day against Bubba. The third quarter was the lowest point for the Vics as loose checking and a lack of a physical presence at centre bounce downs were the main factors in the Allies goal onslaught. By the time the last quarter started, the game was out of reach for the Vics but they fought hard in the last to restrict the margin to 97 points. A 100 point thumping would have been too much for Vics stalwart, Bubba, who had his long winning streak broken by the new breed of Allies. He was visibly upset after the game and was not available for comment. The victory gives the Allies their first in many years and captain Jarrad Crighton thanked his team for giving him the opportunity to finally captain a winning side. Scores and goal kickers to be provided. |
