2005 New York Magpies vs. Philadelphia Hawks – August 13, 2005

New York Magpies vs. Philadelphia Hawks
Miller Field, Staten Island, NY

The Main Game saw the battle of the neighbors with Philadelphia traveling to New York to play New York. On a hot, hazy afternoon both sides were prepared to battle it out in 4 * 15 minute quarters.

The first quarter saw the Hawks come out firing. The Hawks were aggressive at the footy and making the Magpie players earn all their possessions. Both defenses were on top of the offence with goals hard to come by. The last 5 minutes the Magpies started to settle down and converted an opportunity to go into the break 7 points up.

Quarter time Magpies 1.3. 9 to Hawks 0. 2. 2

The second quarter started off much the same as the first. The game was scrappy, physical and was slowly turning into a battle of the fittest. The Hawks were running hard at the footy and making every possession a contest. Again, as in the first quarter the last 5 minutes the Pies piled on the 3 quick goals to go into the main break 4 goals up.

Half Time Magpies 4. 6 . 30 to Hawks 0.4. 4

The 3rd quarter started to open up for the Pies with some good possession from our on ballers and our forwards creating space the Pies were finding opportunities. Due to some inaccurate kicking the Pies only added 3 for the quarter. One of those goals came from some sensational work for first gamer and newcomer to the game Brendan.

Three Quarter Time Magpies 7. 9. 51 to Hawks 0.5 5

The last quarter the Pies set themselves a target of 5 goals for the quarter and to keep the Hawks goalless. The backline strong as ever repelled a couple of early Hawk attacks and with the run the Pies were getting through the middle, the forwards were given plenty of opportunities and converted well. The last quarter saw the Pies add 4 more goals to their tally and they managed to keep the Hawks goalless.

Final Scores Magpies 11. 10. 76 to Hawks 0. 6. 6

The Magpies would like to thank Philly for the making the effort to come and play us especially after Chicago pulled out at the last minute. We needed the hit-out and Philly came through for us, providing with their usual hard-hitting footy game. Would like to thank all the umpires. The 3 of them did a great job in both games. Also we would like to thanks all the wives, girlfriends, kids and supporters that came out on such a hot day, your support as always is appreciated. We would also like to thank Anthony and Col who are always willing to help out. Most importantly would like to thank all the players for coming out and taking part in the day. It's hard to give everyone good playing time with a shortened game and huge numbers and everyone of you knew and understood this..Thanks and you all did a great job.

Boys, we have a huge game against big rival Boston in 2 weeks. We need everyone to at least one training session a week . We need everyone to make themselves available for this game and to go ahead and organize their flights for Florida and the Nationals in Milwaukee … great job and we have 7 weeks left.
