2005 New York Magpies State of Origin – July 23, 2005 – Miller Field, Staten Island, NY

Victoria 21-10-136 (Batty 6, B. Lewis 5, Jackson 3, Sean 2, Bridges 2, Lin 2, Hayes 1) defeated Allies 9-9-63 (Crighten 4, Poluluck 2, Murray 2, Aguesi)

The New York Magpies’ Annual State of Origin Game was held on Saturday at Staten Island’s Miller Field. The Allies came into the game confident of their first win in five years. However, some last minute withdrawals from veteran Sean Patton and Allies recruits Anthony ’Skinny’ Randell and Adam Manners saw the team looking thin at the opening bounce.

In addition, the Victorians picked up Shane Batty, who proved he could be a handy addition to the Magpies side later in the year.

The Victorians led from the get-go taking a three-goal advantage at the first break. The Victorians piled on five goals in the second period and had a convincing lead at the main break, mainly thanks to some great kicking for goal from Batty (who finished with six goals) and Skipper Brett Lewis (five goals).

During the third quarter American veteran Tom Hayes laid a Terry Tate-Office Linebacker tackle on Allies captain Jarrad Crighten in what was viewed by most at the play-of-the-game. The Victorians continued their dominance in the final period, despite some great goal kicking from Crighten and some strong midfield running from Jimmy Poluluck.

The Magpies’ next fixture will see them taking on the Chicago Swans at Staten Island on August 13. The day will also see action for the Gotham Magpies who will face the Philadelphia Hawks. More details will be nyfooty.com shortly.
