2005 Eastern Australian Football League – May 21, 2005
New York Magpies vs. Pittsburgh Wallabies After a short rest, the Magpies entered into EAFL Round 2 versus the Wallabies. The Wallabies are a newly re-structured club, and although their numbers are small, they showed a lot of fight and glimmers of excellent play that bode well for the future of their club. A highlight for the Wallabies was the Pittsburgh debut of ex-Magpie Eric “The Silent Assassin” Lerner, who proved that horizontal stripes can be slimming, if accessorized properly. As in the game versus Baltimore/Washington, the ’Pies strong run in the midfield and dominant ruckmen were the difference in the first quarter. New York poured on four goals to start the game, including two to Joey “I Am The Fire Engine” Agueci. Joey’s second goal was a cracker, with a nice run topped off by a left-footed kick through the posts. Q1: New York 4.4 (20) to Pittsburgh 0.0 (0) The Magpies were on fire in the second quarter, fueled by great runs through packs and booming kicks from Chris “Please Come Back To NYC” O’Keefe, who had three goals in this term. James Anderson also continued his great work for the Magpies, slotting through two additional goals on his first day in a Magpies jumper. Ben “Unicycle” Vonwiller also had a great Magpies debut, kicking his second goal for the day. Q2: New York 12.4 (76) to Pittsburgh 0.0 (0) Pittsburgh showed they had no quit in them by rallying in the third quarter. Although New York scored three goals in this term, Pittsburgh continued to work hard and put two goals through themselves. Notable for New York is the first goal for another Magpies debutant, as Walt “I Love New York” Lin coolly slotted through a major score. Q3: New York 15.6 (96) to Pittsburgh 2.0 (12) Although being comfortably on top, New York pushed hard throughout the fourth quarter. To the credit of the Wallabies, they never gave up and represented at every contest throughout the game. Dougie “Prez” Lewis and Shane “The Big Trash” Devine both scored their first goals of the season, and come to think of it, their first goals since the days of black-and-white television. Q4: New York 19.10 (124) to Pittsburgh 3.0 (18) Goals: O’Keefe 4, Agueci 2, Anderson 2, Laube 2, Crighton 2, Desai, Devine, Jackson, Lewis, Lin, Murray, Vonwiller The Magpies’ victory pushed them to 2-0 to start this first season of EAFL action. Many thanks to our hosts the Pittsburgh Wallabies for a well-organized day at South Park, and a great night out at the Boomerang BBQ and Sports Rock Café. I’m sure the dancing pole there will never be the same… Match video highlights To download to your computer for local playback right click on the following link and choose “Save Target As...” or “Save Link As...” Video Highlights ( 24M Windows Media).
