THE MAGSCENE

July 2006 Edition

“I would like to thank the NY Magpies for helping me train for my event. I have never seen a group of people so dedicated to helping me become a World Class athlete. All of the nights out eating as much as we all could got me in the shape I needed to be” – Takeru Kobayashi, 6 time World Hot Dog eating champion [53.75 dogs and buns in 12 minutes]

1. WORLD CUP SOCCER WRAP UP

Diving, fake injuries, head butting, low scoring, a record number of yellow cards, referee scandals, and oh yes ties!!! The world waited four years to realize that once again soccer is a farce, and this is from an Italian fan. Scientists say that the attention span of the average person is 30 minutes, I say the average memory must be 4 years since in 2010 people will be all pumped up for the Soccer World Cup again in South Africa, forgetting how boring and heart breaking the game can be.

Check out this short film that was part of the Tribeca Film Festival, go to the link below and search for Bloody Footy. It is a comedic look at an Italian Father living in Australia and his Aussie-Italian son, who prefers footy and not his father’s passion for Soccer.

2. HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, THE NEW HOME OF FOOTY

Hoboken, the real home of the first baseball game, the birthplace of Frank Sinatra, and New York’s unofficial 6th borough, will host its first ever NY Magpies Metro League footy games on July 15, 2006 at 4 PM. As the NJ official motto says “Come see for yourself” The State actually pretended to shut down for 6 days to secretly get ready for this event, that is how big it is going to be.

The game has been getting a lot of press with articles in:

Representatives from the Hoboken Mayors office will be on hand as well as potentially the Australian Consul General. Free prizes will be given out by the Magpies and the post game function will kick on at Mile Square Bar and Grill, free entry and extended drink specials. Check out http://nyfooty.com/ for details including a very cool flyer at http://nyfooty.com/images/MetroLeague_Hoboken_Flyer1.pdf

3. A TREE, NO WAIT, A MEAT PIE SHOP GROWS IN BROOKLYN?

Maybe you have had a pie or a sausage roll at a Magpies function, well odds are that they were made right here in NYC by expert New Zealand chef, Gareth Hughes. He now has his own shop in a terrific up and coming Brooklyn neighborhood, called the Columbia waterfront (193 Columbia Street). The shop boasts:

Get all the info at http://www.dubpies.com/ and a 20% discount on all online orders until July 23rd.

“In my opinion these are the best pies I have had in New York and I should know.” NY Magpies President

Judging by the number of visits he has made to DUB Pies and the number on his pants waistband we trust him.

4. MAGPIES ANNUAL JUMPER SALE

Back by popular demand…… you may have seen them in New York, London, or as far as Brazil, Greece, or Ocean Grove, Victoria, these hot items have been sold worldwide.

Here is your fourth chance to order your very own New York Magpie jumper.

Orders are subject to a minimum order quantity of 20, which we hope to reach by the end of August. If you chose to wait until the next order you will need to wait for a build up of orders to receive your jumper, normally one order per year.

We are setting a cutoff date of September 1st, 2006. Please note that it will take several weeks to get them produced and shipped to us. If you want any to go directly from the manufacturer to someone in Australia we can do that to reduce the wait time. Jumpers must also be paid for before September 1st since these are custom made items.

These make great gifts for footy fans, especially Magpies supporters.

FYI-Ben Graham of the NY Jets already has one on order just for him.

Thanks to the highly talented webmaster, orders can be placed online at:

Any problems or questions let us know.
