The Magpies and the Manhattan
International Netball Club (MINC) are getting together once again to host a
fundraiser. Last year’s bash was a blast, and we expect this year’s party
to be even better! The party is being held at Turtle Bay in Midtown (on 2nd Avenue at 53rd St.) and offers free food, a free
drink, and specials on Coopers and Tooheys. Even better, everyone who
enters has the chance to win a full slab of VB, courtesy of the Aussie
Consulate! So come on over, and bring all your friends! More details and
directions at http://nyfooty.com/social/2005/mincs.shtml
An important party note: the Magpies and the MINCs will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Aussie youngster Dylan Hartung, who has a severe form of cancer. He and his family have come to the US to seek treatment for him – but it’s very expensive! Please help us help Dylan, and come support the Summer Fling fundraiser. For more details on Dylan, you can check out his website, http://www2.caringbridge.org/me/dylanhartung/.
The USAFLs all-American representative team, the Revolution, are in Australia right now to participate in the International Cup. The Revos won their first game against South Africa 9.8 (62) to 4.10 (34). The Magpies’ President, Doug Lewis, worked incredibly hard and secured a spot on the Revos’ roster. He played the 3rd and 4th quarters of the game vs. South Africa, but unfortunately caught a forearm to the face about ten minutes into the 4th quarter, and had to be sent off under the blood rule.
The Revos’ also won their second game, a thrilling win over defending champion Ireland. Unfortunately Dougie didn’t play in this game, but it was a great win for the us nevertheless, as they handed Ireland their first-ever defeat in international footy.
The Revos’ brilliant form continued in their third game vs. Spain, where Dougie got to start. He played well again, holding his opponent to no touches on the footy, but unfortunately his playing time was cut short again by another knock to the face.
The Revos’ unfortunately went down to defeat in their fourth game vs. Papua New Guinea, losing by one point after a furious comeback. But they nevertheless still a good chance for the Cup, sitting fourth on the ladder. Their next game is Thursday, August 11th vs. top-seeded New Zealand, which should be a very exciting match.
For more information on the Revolution and the International Cup, check out the USAFL’s website (http://usfooty.com/usfooty/) and the World Footy News website (http://worldfootynews.com/).
Magpie legend Tommy “Iron Man” Thompson narrowly missed
out on his chance to join the Revolution last year, with only an ill-timed
injury keeping him from competing in the tryouts. But nevertheless,
Tommy’s passion for footy led him to Australia to support the Revos.
Tommy’s passion also led him out to Avoca, where he was invited to play with
the reserves for the Avoca Football Club. Avoca were rapt to have Tommy
with them, and by all reports he acquitted himself well out on the field,
looking brilliant in Avoca’s red, white and blue uniform. Nice work
Tommy!

Australia Bans Video Game “Grand Theft Auto”
Apparently the violence didn’t fuss the Aussies all that much, but the allegedly hidden graphical sex scenes did!

It looks like the Mum in Fox Trot feels the same way… hope the Aussies don’t ban “Donkey Kong” next!
